Origin story
School. The word itself can bring up images of dreary classrooms, monotonous assignments, and the endless pursuit of good grades. But amidst the chaos of textbooks and exams, I found myself asking a simple question: why are we learning? This question drove me to uncover a fundamental truth: true learning should ignite curiosity, foster creativity, fun, it's by-product being; a better society. Picture this: a curious 8-year-old me, scribbling furiously in my small notebook at the beach. "Wat is kaas in het Engels?" (Which translates to: what is cheese in English), I'd ask my parents, relentless in my pursuit of knowledge whilst they simply wanted to enjoy their holiday. In elementary school I used to really like maths and so, I would write down all the multiplications on a paper 1 x 1 = 1, all the way till 60 x 60 = 3600. Why? I thought it was cool to see the numbers grow. Curiosity sparked within me, it drove me to learn, cultivating a fun factor. I later found a sense of joy and fulfilment in my day by helping out fellow students with assignments, mostly related to my passion for numbers. I had applied with a tutoring company, later I got a reply, surprised by the email I took on the job and started tutoring. It was amazing. Over the weeks I saw this person grow in her abilities to solve problems. And I got to reinforce my knowledge about the topics. It was a win-win situation, except for the fact that the study material wasn’t always fun to them. Our curiosity needs to be peaked so that we’re eager to learn and find out what things mean and how it influences us. So how do you get people to be curious? I wanted to make learning more fun, to spark their curiosity. That’s when I came up with the idea to redefine the learning experience. Drawing upon my discovery that Curiosity + Relevance = A desire for learning, I envisioned Lurn — a tutoring company designed to make tutoring not only informative but engaging, by sparking curiosity, and demonstrating the relevance of what we learn.
